OntoEdit: Collaborative Ontology Engineering for the Semantic Web

OntoEdit: Collaborative Ontology Engineering for the Semantic Web Ontologies now play an important role for enabling the semantic web. They provide source of precisely de ﬁned terms e.g.for knowledge-intensive applications.The terms are used for concise communication across people and applications.Typically the development of ontologies involves collaborative efforts of multiple persons. OntoEdit is an ontology editor that integrates numerous aspects of ontology engineering. This paper focuses on collaborative development of ontologies with OntoEdit which is guided by comprehensive methodology. This includes particularly the integration of the two other OntoWeb related portals, viz. the OntoWeb Roadmap portal and the OntoWeb Edu portal, based on the exchange of RDF(S). To achieve the integration, the OntoWeb.org ontology has been updated. Furthermore, the OntoWeb.org portal is collaborating with the SemanticWeb.org portal, i.e. they are exchanging contents such as e.g. posted events. In a nutshell, the extended OntoWeb.org portal is an ontology-based, highly-scalable and reliable community platform which provides flexible facilities based on RDF(S) (and in near future on OWL) to (i) import content from other portals and (ii) export content to other portals. It structures existing information and provides background information about technical issues as well as the context in which information has been generated or should be interpreted. Further, many systems such as the BUISY (Bremer Umweltinformationssystem) use metadata in order to provide content-based search facilities. Such methods, however, depend on the correctness and completeness of the metadata. In this paper, we discuss an approach for automatically analyzing the metadata of web-based information systems that is based on machine learning techniques and its application to different environmental systems.
